A 2-year-old has become the youngest organ donor in India.

Prosper, known as Lunda Kayumba, donated his pancreas, kidneys, and corneas to four patients at PGI, a public medical university in Chandigarh, India.

His family called the donation “a source of solace”. According to his relatives, they made the decision after Prosper, who had suffered a serious injury from a fall, was declared brain-dead on October 26.

Prosper’s pancreas and kidney went to two patients in need of critical transplants, while his second kidney and both corneas helped restore vision and health for others.

Director at PGI, Prof. Vivek Lal while acknowledging that the loss of Prosper’s life was tragic, described the gesture by his family as noble.

“The noble choice made by Prosper's family serves as a powerful reminder of the extraordinary potential for kindness, turning a moment of despair into a precious gift of life for others,” he was quoted as having said.

Prosper’s mother, Jackline Diary noted that the family finds comfort in knowing their son’s organs will bring hope to others in pain.

“While our hearts are shattered into a million pieces, we find solace in knowing that Prosper's organs will give life to others in pain,” she said.

Although successful, doctors who performed the surgeries noted that transplants with very young organs did not come without unique challenges.

“Transplants from young donors present unique challenges, not only in terms of surgical technique but also in navigating the emotional landscape surrounding such a significant loss,” Prof. Ashish Sharma, head of renal transplant surgery was quoted.

Prosper’s donation is a testament to the significant impact of organ donation on lives around the world.
