Thousands of demonstrators marched in Mexico City for International Women’s Day, marking the country’s first March 8 protest under a woman president.

The demonstration turned tense as police clashed with protesters demanding stronger protections for women’s rights, the AFP reports.

"It is a reminder to the president that we all want to arrive free, alive, and with our rights," said one demonstrator.

Activists are urging the new leader to take decisive action on gender violence, equality, and justice for women across Mexico.
