African nations that spend the most on vacation
While the African continent is mostly known for being one of the popular tourist destinations for the rest of the world due to its vast natural landscape and wildlife, some Africans like to vacation and experience life overseas.
Insights provided by Merchant Machine, a UK-based payment guide website reveal the top African nations that stand out for their overseas spending habits.
Here are the top five biggest spenders from Africa:
- Moroccan tourists spend the most of any African nation with an average spending of $932 on vacation abroad.
- Ugandan vacationers also follow closely with an average spending of $922.
- Sierra Leoneans come in third with average spending of $631 when they travel overseas.
- North African nation, Tunisia comes in fourth with an average spending of $234.
- Togo rounds off the top five with an average spending of $160.
Merchant Machine's analysis utilised UNWTO data, examining the total outbound expenditure for 94 nations and dividing it by the total number of departures, reported as "overnight visitors" by some countries.
A 2019 survey found that only 28% of Moroccans choose to go abroad for vacations with the rest of the population opting to vacation in the country with the most popular destinations within Morocco being Marrakech, Agadir, Casablanca, and Rabat, Tangier, Fez, and Meknes.
Those who vacation outside usually opt for European destinations like Spain, France, and Italy, as well as outside European destinations like Dubai and Indonesia.
Meanwhile, South Koreans are the biggest overseas spenders in Asia and also rank second in the world, while Brazilians top the list in Latin America.
