China says it wants to maintain “healthy and stable” relations with South Korea after South Korea’s parliament voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol.

The president was suspended over an attempt to limit civilian rule, which has caused major political unrest in the country.

South Korea’s Constitutional Court now has six months to decide whether to confirm his removal.

China’s foreign ministry said promoting stable relations between the two countries will benefit both countries.

According to Spokesman Lin Jian, South Korea is an important neighbour and partner.

This comes after Yoon’s recent accusations of China spying on South Korean intelligence, a claim that angered Beijing and raised tensions further.
