At least 167 people lost their lives when a Jeju Air plane crash-landed and erupted into flames at Muan International Airport in South Korea on Sunday, December 29, according to the national fire agency.
The ill-fated flight, 7C2216, was arriving from Bangkok, Thailand, carrying 175 passengers and six crew members. The incident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. local time (0000 GMT) as the aircraft attempted to land at the southern airport, the South Korean transport ministry confirmed.
Two crew members were rescued from the wreckage, while officials indicated that the remaining passengers and crew are presumed dead.
This is the deadliest air accident ever on South Korean soil and the worst involving a South Korean airline in nearly three decades.
