Cuba wins first fight at Women’s Boxing World Championship without a single punch

Cuba has won its first fight in the Women's World Boxing Championship.
Boxer Melani Girado, competing in the 57kg category, secured victory on March 10, without having to throw a punch because her opponent, Halima Vunjabei from Tanzania, did not show up for the match.
This is Cuba’s first time taking part in the tournament.
Girado’s next fight will be against the winner of a match between Nigina Uktamova of Uzbekistan and Kasumova of Georgia, according to the International Boxing Association.
Two other Cuban boxers, Yoana Rodriguez (81kg) and Dayira Mesa (75kg), are also competing.
Rodriguez fought Uzbekistan’s Sokhiba Ruzmetova, while Mesa faced Russia’s Anastasia Shamonova on March 11 and 12.
Coaches Ivan Sadiel Horta del Rey and Santiago Suarez said the team is motivated and ready for the matches ahead.
Women’s boxing started late in Cuba, but they believe they have strong support from the National Commission and a dedicated team working together.
