Ghana’s defence and environment ministers die in military helicopter crash

Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and Environment Minister, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, have died in a military helicopter crash on August 6.
The two were among eight individuals who lost their lives while travelling aboard a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) aircraft from Accra to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
Earlier in the day, the GAF announced that the Z9 helicopter had gone “off the radar” after departing the capital at “0912 hrs.” The military confirmed that “on board were 3 crew members and 5 passengers.”
Other individuals confirmed dead in the crash include Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former Parliamentary Candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Chief of Staff to the President of Ghana, Julius Debrah, made the official announcement.
According to local sources, the crew members were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
