Haiti faces dire humanitarian crisis with over 700,000 displaced persons: Video
More than 700,000 Haitians have been forced from their homes as gang violence worsens in the country.
Gangs have infiltrated the capital, Port-au-Prince, displacing families and causing severe food shortages.
The violence has also affected the country’s security and health systems, with critical services collapsing. The United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM) says the number of displaced people, particularly children, has risen by 22 percent since June.
"This is hell!" says Immacula Pierre, a displaced woman living in a shelter in Port-au-Prince. "This is it! I live it here. Growing up, I used to hear that hell and heaven exist. Well, I'm living hell in Haiti today."
The UN has called for greater international attention and support, urging a sustained humanitarian response to assist those affected. Many of the displaced are living in overcrowded shelters or being hosted by struggling families, with limited access to food, healthcare, and basic supplies.
Efforts to restore security and stability continue, with the UN Security Council approving a multinational policing mission to help the Haitian police deal with the escalating crisis.
