International organisations blocked from visiting ex-Ecuadorian VP Jorge Glas: Video
International organisations have been denied the right to visit Ecuador’s former Vice President Jorge Glas, who is currently being held in La Roca, a maximum-security prison in Guayaquil, following his arrest during an April 5 raid on the Mexican Embassy.
Concerns about his health and well-being have been raised by supporters and rights groups, who claim his detention violates international law, the AFP reports.
Coordinator of the Committee for the Release of Jorge Glas, Sacha Llorenti expressed deep concern over Glas’s condition.
"We have already sent several notes expressing our concern and unease about Jorge Glas’s health, including to the United Nations system, such as the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, in addition to a series of awareness actions about what is happening with Jorge Glas," Llorenti said.
Llorenti further stated that the responsibility for Glas’s safety lies with Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa. "President Noboa is responsible for the ongoing violation of international law and for Glas’s current condition in prison."
Supporters of Glas argue that his detention is politically motivated and violates international legal standards.
