Chad has stopped giving visas to US citizens after being listed among African nations affected by a new American travel ban.

The decision, announced by President Mahamat Deby, comes just a day after former US President Donald Trump signed an order blocking citizens from Chad and six other African countries from entering the United States.

Chad says its move is in response to the US restrictions.

The visa standoff highlights growing tensions over how African countries are treated in global immigration policies.

Trump said the travel ban was meant to protect the US from terrorist threats and security risks. But critics argue the decision unfairly targets African nations and is not based on clear or current security intelligence.

The African Union Commission warned that such bans could damage long-standing diplomatic and economic relationships between the US and the continent.

“The African Union Commission respectfully calls upon the U.S.  Administration to consider adopting a more consultative approach and to engage in constructive dialogue with the countries concerned,” it said in a statement on X.
