A 40-year-old Mauritanian man has been jailed for 20 years accompanied by a heavy fine in Morocco after he was arrested in September by the Moroccan police.

The Tangier Court of Appeal found him guilty of serious crimes against Moroccan state security on Thursday after he was put on trial for attempting to smuggle 38 Spanish military uniforms through the Tangier Med port, according to the Mauritanian news website Kassataya.

The Moroccan police also discovered on him during his arrest a piece of identification bearing the Polisario logo, a movement advocating for the independence of Western Sahara.

Media reports of the Polisario's intention to use armed drones against Morocco set the accused's conduct against a backdrop of increasing threat.

However, during his defence, the accused denied any affiliation with the Polisario, insisting that the items discovered were for hunting purposes, Kassataya reported.
