New York City Mayor Eric Adams traveled to the Dominican Republic to honor the victims of the recent nightclub roof collapse in Santo Domingo, where over 200 individuals lost their lives. This visit highlights the significant connection between New York City and its Dominican community, which comprises approximately 700,000 residents, accounting for 8% of the city's total population.

Upon his arrival, Mayor Adams met with local authorities and law enforcement officials before visiting the site of the Jet Set nightclub, where the tragic incident occurred during a concert on April 7. He was received by Victor D’Aza, president of the Dominican Municipal League, who stressed the urgent need for enhanced supervision and adherence to construction regulations.

Rescue efforts successfully saved 189 individuals, with 12 remaining hospitalized, including three in critical condition. The number of confirmed victims rose from 226 to 231, as reported by Interior Minister Faride Raful. An investigation into the cause of the collapse is currently underway.

Victor D’Aza remarked, "This has to be a lesson for more effective supervision, for rigor in compliance with the rules. This is a wake-up call," underscoring the need for regulatory reforms. To further pay his respects, Mayor Adams is scheduled to attend a Mass in the evening. His visit occurs as he prepares for re-election in the wake of a bribery controversy and scrutiny from Democratic supporters regarding his associations with Republican President Donald Trump.
