Public beaches in Mombasa have been closed for two days following a weather warning about strong winds and high waves along the Kenyan coast.

The decision, announced on May 23 by Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sherrif Nassir, takes immediate effect.

It follows an advisory from the Kenya Meteorological Department warning of strong southerly winds expected to reach over 35 knots (18 m/s) during the weekend.

The governor also suspended all ocean-based activities, including fishing and water sports, until further notice.

Construction work has also been halted temporarily due to the risk posed by the strong winds, with contractors directed to secure their sites.

County authorities say they will issue daily updates and are working with emergency and maritime agencies to ensure safety.

Mombasa has several public beaches, including Pirates, Nyali, Bamburi, and Shanzu. The strong winds and waves are expected to ease on May 25.
