NASA honours Algerian parks with Martian namesakes: Video
NASA has named three Martian regions after iconic Algerian national parks: Tassili n'Ajjer, Ghoufi, and Djurdjura. This initiative, proposed by Algerian physicist Noureddine Melikechi, aims to honour his homeland and highlight the importance of preserving Earth's natural habitats.
The named parks:
- Tassili n'Ajjer: Known for its prehistoric art and vast plateau in the Sahara Desert, this UNESCO-listed site has a visual resemblance to some Martian landscapes.
- Ghoufi: This canyon in eastern Algeria, with its ancient cliffside dwellings, symbolises human resilience in harsh environments.
- Djurdjura: A snowy mountain range east of Algiers, chosen to remind us of the richness of natural habitats.
