Protests as UN judge Lydia Mugambe jailed for enslaving Ugandan woman in UK: Video
Outrage and protests flared outside Oxford Crown Court on Friday as United Nations judge Lydia Mugambe was sentenced to six years and four months in prison for enslaving a young Ugandan woman while studying for a PhD in law at the University of Oxford.
The 50-year-old judge, formerly lauded for her human rights work, was convicted of forcing the woman to work as a domestic slave, in what the court described as a “most egregious abuse of power and status.”
The court found that Mugambe exploited her position as a respected international jurist and mentor, coercing the woman, also Ugandan, into prolonged servitude under conditions that violated her dignity and autonomy.
