Record bluefin tuna fetches $3.2m at Tokyo’s New Year auction: Video
A 243-kilogram bluefin tuna has sold for 3.2 million dollars at the annual New Year auction at Tokyo’s Toyosu Market, underlining the enduring symbolism of the event in Japan’s culinary world.
The winning bid came from Kiyomura Corp., which operates the Sushi Zanmai restaurant chain, with owner Kiyoshi Kimura surpassing his own previous record set in 2019.
Caught off the coast of Oma in northern Japan, an area renowned for high-quality tuna, the fish quickly became a focal point of attention for both traders and diners. Restaurateurs say the high prices paid at the first auction of the year are driven not only by the quality of the catch, but also by prestige and the belief that securing the top lot brings good fortune — while also serving as a powerful draw for customers eager to sample the most talked-about tuna of the season.
