Suspect in 12 North Carolina shootings arrested

Police in Raleigh, North Carolina, have arrested a suspect in a series of apparently random vehicle shootings over three days this week and charged him with one count of assault and 11 counts of firing into an occupied vehicle or home.

Andrew Thomas Graney, 23, appeared before a judge in Wake County court on Friday and is being held without bail, court records show.

A public defender assigned to his case did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for a statement in his defense.

Police accuse Graney of firing a .45-caliber handgun at 11 vehicles and one home on or near Interstate 40 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, injuring one person.

He was arrested at or near his home on Thursday, police said. Another person arrested at the time was released without charges.

Graney is a senior student majoring in anthropology at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, WTVD television reported, citing a university spokesperson.
