Thailand’s government has stopped issuing new gun-carrying permits for one year.

The decision, signed by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, will take effect on February 14, 2025.

Officials say the move is meant to reduce gun violence and make the country safer.

A government spokesperson explained that many violent crimes happen because people carry guns without a clear reason.

The government believes that stopping new permits, at least for now, will help reduce crime and keep the public safe.

The order was published in the Royal Gazette, making it official. During the one-year period, no new gun-carrying licenses will be approved.

However, it is not yet clear what will happen once the ban ends.
