Trump to award Charlie Kirk posthumous Medal of Freedom after assassination: Video
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday, September 11, that slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk will be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honour.
Speaking at a 9/11 anniversary event at the Pentagon, Trump described Kirk as “a giant of his generation” whose activism shaped conservative youth politics in the United States. “Charlie was a champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions and millions of people,” Trump said, expressing condolences to Kirk’s wife, Erika, and their children.
Kirk, 31, was shot dead during a public event in Utah on Wednesday evening. According to reports, the activist was answering a question on gun violence in front of an audience of 3,000 when he was fatally attacked. His death has shocked the conservative movement, where he was widely regarded as one of the most influential voices of his generation.
Trump said the posthumous award ceremony would be held soon and promised it would draw significant public attention. “I can only guarantee you one thing,” he told the crowd, “we will have a very big crowd. Very, very big.”
