Vietnam wins gold to emerge world champions in taekwondo
Vietnamese athletes won gold at the 2024 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships to emerge top in the world sport.
The team of six scored 8.680 points in the over-17 freestyle mixed team event held in Hong Kong, China.
They beat 14 rivals to take first place.
This victory marks Vietnam's first gold medal at the championship since 2016. Mexico came in second with 8.660 points, while Italy and the Philippines came third.
Vietnam also secured a bronze medal in the male junior team event. They ranked behind teams from South Korea and the United States.
Head coach Nguyễn Thanh Huy praised the athletes for their strong performance despite tough competition, especially from South Korea, the home of taekwondo.
“All athletes were asked to deliver their best for the highest results,” he was quoted.
This year’s championship is the largest in history, with 1,727 athletes from 77 countries and regions. The event will continue until Wednesday.
