Police in Kolkata, India, used teargas and water cannons to disperse protesters on Tuesday, August 27.

This follows weeks of protests against the August 9 attack on a 31-year-old female doctor who was raped and murdered while on night shift.

University students led the crowds in breaking through security barricades, demanding the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her handling of the case.

A 33-year-old police volunteer, part of a government-employed civic force assisting police at the hospital, has been arrested and charged with the crime.

Reports show sexual crimes against women in India increased from 25,000 cases in 2012 to 31,000 over the past decade.

Gender-based violence remains a significant issue in India. According to a national health survey by the Indian Ministry of Health, nearly one in three women has reported experiencing some form of violence, based on a sample of almost 725,000 women nationwide.
