Why Venezuela is calling for a Global South summit to halt the Iran-Israel war: Video
The government of Nicolás Maduro proposed a summit on Monday, June 23 to promote a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, a key ally of Venezuela, while warning of "a crisis with catastrophic nuclear consequences."
The war between Iran and Israel broke out on June 13 following an unprecedented Israeli attack on nuclear and military facilities in the Islamic Republic, which denies seeking to manufacture atomic weapons and defends its right to develop a civilian nuclear program.
"Faced with this scenario, Venezuela makes an urgent call" to organisations in the global south to jointly promote an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in West Asia," said Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, reading a letter signed by President Nicolás Maduro.
This "threatens to trigger a crisis with catastrophic nuclear consequences for the region and the world," read Rodríguez's letter in support of Iran. In the letter, Maduro addresses organisations such as "the Non-Aligned Movement, the League of Arab States, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Gulf Cooperation Council, the African Union, the BRICS, CELAC, and other regional bodies."
