Russia commemorated the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War Two with a large-scale military parade and fireworks display on Friday, May 9.

The event, centred on Red Square and Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow, drew thousands of spectators and featured significant international participation.

President Vladimir Putin presided over the Victory Day celebrations, which included a procession of tanks, missiles, and troops. The ceremony was attended by more than two dozen world leaders, among them Chinese President Xi Jinping, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Burkina Faso’s junta leader Ibrahim Traore.

Victory Day is Russia’s most prominent secular holiday, commemorating the Soviet Union’s role in the Allied victory in 1945. This year’s celebration was the largest since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine and marked the highest level of international representation in Moscow in the past decade.
