Hong Kong's top court overturns convictions of pro-democracy activists in landmark ruling: Video
Hong Kong's Court of Final Appeal on March 5 unanimously overturned the convictions of three former members of a pro-democracy group that had organized an annual candlelight vigil to commemorate China's 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.
The court cited a miscarriage of justice in the case.
The ruling represents a rare victory for Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement, which has faced severe repression in recent years. Many activists have been imprisoned or forced into exile, and numerous civil society groups promoting liberal values have been disbanded.
The judgment, delivered by a panel of five judges led by Chief Justice Andrew Cheung, criticized the government’s handling of the case, noting that key facts had been intentionally omitted by prosecutors.
